SLDR – ProgrammeCourse plan – last update 26 February 2010Program for the excursion and workshop | Practical info for the excursion
The basic daily schedule will be as follows:
Each day consists of four 90-minute blocks. The course types will be: Lectures, fieldwork tutorials, groundwork seminars on documentation essentials and technical demonstrations.
Lectures (9:15–10:45) are intended to provide an introduction and state of the art overview to the issues of language endangerment, language documentation and Saami linguistics.
Fieldwork tutorials (11:15–12:45) continue the proven tradition of intensive, daily group interaction with a native speaker of a little-known language, under the guidance of an experienced field worker. Languages chosen will be lesser-known Saami languages. We will have three parallel tutorials, with the groups staying together for the duration of the summer school. Beside English, linguae francae in these groups will be Norwegian/Swedish, and Russian respectively.
Groundwork seminars (14:15–15:45) are intended to cover essentials of general linguistics, language documentation, and revitalization. The courses are tailored to the Saami context.
Technical demonstrations (16:15–17:45) Here students
learn hands-on skills such as using different types of hard- and software, with
an emphasis on gaining practical experience
A workshop scheduled during the weekend will take place during an excursion to Árran and will draw together members from the Saami Documentation and Revitalization Network, winter school participants and local Saami activists with the aim of establishing future initiatives towards the documentation and revitalization of Saami languages. Questions discussed are: How should revitalization projects be founded and institutionalized, How can they be funded and maintained, How can non-native linguists be involved?
